Robin Radar Systems is incredibly proud to announce our partnership with Equinor on the landmark project, Hywind Tampen, the world's largest floating offshore wind farm and the first renewable power for offshore oil and gas.

An initial wind turbine was installed offshore in May, and one of our MAX® avian radars has been set up on one of the 11 turbines. 

MAX® will play an essential role in monitoring bird behaviour around the floating wind farm, providing 24/7 data on the effects of offshore wind on local protected species as well as migratory birds, with full 3D coverage. 

The insights gleaned from the radar will be part of a larger study conducted by Equinor to investigate how bird life is affected in proximity to offshore wind farms.

This important work is supported by the Norwegian Research Council and the project manager from the NINA (Norwegian Institute for Nature Research) through the MARCIS project, which aims to develop a decision-making tool to assess the overall effects of human activities in the marine environment on seabirds and other birds that migrate across the sea. Robin also collaborated with our partners NINA and Wood on the project.

Equinor is conducting a number of studies on offshore wind coexistence and environmental impact, and Hywind Tampen is integral to this undertaking. 

The offshore wind farm will serve as a test bed for further development of floating wind, exploring the use of new and larger turbines, installation methods, simplified moorings, concrete substructures and integration between gas and wind power generation systems.

This wind power solution will help reduce the use of gas turbine power for the Snorre and Gullfaks offshore fields, while also offsetting 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 1,000 tonnes of NOx emissions per year.
